my central a/c unit (outdoors) won't stay on long enough to satisfy the stat setting. it runs for a short time then goes off. it does come back on. it is a 3 ton kenmore. i have installed a new stat(last summer) that has been working fine. any suggestions?

does the idoor fan stay on after the outdoor unit shuts off? if so, we are losing the low volt signal the the outdoor unit probably. what make/model is it? you could have a low or high pressure safety that is automatically reset. if indoor fan cycles off, i would look at the tstat. is it digital? many times those bimetal thermometers on the mercury tstats get out of calibration....just a few thoughts.

thanks for the suggestions-
i usually keep the fan in the on position to keep air moving. i checked the low voltage line and made sure conections were secure, they were. i have a digital honeywell stat. i replaced the batteries in it. the stat is set for 76 and the outdoor unit goes off at 78.

put the fan in the auto position to see if it cycles off. check the owners manual for the tstat to be sure it is configured correctly. there may be an offset or swing temp that may need to be adjusted.
