Hi
Can someone tell me how to get a ceiling register to stay in the ceiling when the hole cut around the duct is to large and the screws for the register have nothing to screw into? Outside of installing a code air exchange up there, is there some kind of frame I can get to screw into the ceiling and then install the register into that?

I have made two L brackets and screwed them to the inside of the duct and then fastened the grill to the other part of the L.

if so, have someone to hold a short 2X4 against the sheetrock in the attic where the screws will go into it. GregH's idea is a good one if there is no one to go upstairs, or you cannot get up there.

As I understand it, the only problem is to get the screws to hold it in place. Use a shim as a backer just a bit larger than the opening and small wood screws, two should be fine. Color the screw heads with colored fingernail polish or paint using a Q-tip as a dabber.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I'll post an update when I have gotten a chance to get back at it.
