I am interested in painting the kitchen cabinets in the house I just bought. They are a medium colored stain with a polyurethane-type finish. I would like to paint them off white. My question is ... will I need to sand the cabinets, or is there something that can be done to prepare them without sanding? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I recommend scuff sanding them with some 120 grit paper to roughen the surface a bit. Then wash them clean, clean. You don't have to scuff sand them, but it is a good idea and doesn't take long to do. Use TSP or mineral spirits to remove all the hidden grease, dirt, and grime. Kitchens are the dirtiest rooms in the house. After that, prime the cabinets with a good primer - sealer such as Zinsser 123 and paint with two coats of your choice of top of the line semi-gloss paints. Sand lightly with 180 grit paper between coats to smooth everything.
