Help! I live in a 103 yr home that has panelling over the lathe and plaster. I am presently renovating the upstairs/downstairs hallway. Upon removing the wallpaper we found various different pieces of panelling on the wall. We have a very limited budget for removating this hallway and wallpapering is out of the budge at this time. At this point we decided to fill in the grooves before painting. What is the best way to do this?

Many folks fill the grooves in paneling with joint compound. They seem to be satisfied with the way it looks, once primed and painted.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your help. Please forgive my stupidity here but is joint compound the same as drywall mud? And how do you get it smooth enough not to show? Thanks again

I used joint compound when I did my kitchen and hallway. But they were both chair-railed with only 3 foot height of panelling. It was a job, but it looks good. If you do this, beware, you will need to fill and sand at least twice, and possible 3 times. Joint compound shrinks when it dries.

I'm going to do my great room next, but after reading this board, I'm NOT filling the grooves. Its huge, and I know how dusty it gets now. I did find this article that might help:

Hope this helps.

edit to add more info.

Hi Helen,

My suggestion for your paneling problem would be to not sand it, nor fill in any grooves. If I were you, I would brown bag it! It is soooo easy and it looks like leather when you're done. My sister and I both have paneling and this technique worked great without all the sanding and filling in, etc. You may already know how to do it, but if not, here are some before and after pictures of our project along with the easy instructions:<p>
