Suggestions??? I want to use the oak pedestal base from my current dining room table and have my husband make a new top. Currently, the base is attached to the top by long metal rods running through the pedestal. My husband is not a woodworker and does not believe this is a project we should tackle. However, I have priced new tables and chairs - if I can afford the table - then I certainly cannot afford the chairs!! LOL.
Any suggestions on how to go about this project?

If the table is solid oak, have you considered refinishing the top?
Sanding with a random orbit sander, starting with 80 grit paper will remove the old finish and most of the stain. The successive sanding with 120, then 220 grit paper will give a nice smooth finish. (don't think about a belt sander, or the top will probably be torn up too badly).
Just a thought to save a good oak table--------
