I read the online article on how to repair chairs using the mallet/glue/sash cord method. I performed this procedure on a nifty solid maple spindle table and chair set bought new in the early fifties. Sadly my wonderful repair only lasted two years. Now all the chairs are in the basement awaiting repair (plus stripping the 70's green and 80's blue paint) again. This time I am considering using a wood sweller kit for the chair legs and spindles since the wood has dried and shrunk some since 1952. I'm open to suggestions and/or opinions on the use of the wood sweller vs. other techniques. Once I get this right we will have a nice solid maple drop leaf table and four chairs again.

I am not familiar with a 'wood sweller'. Wood is what it is.

Here is promotional mention about it.

I have not found any discussion of anyone having actually used wood sweller.

To make tenons larger, glue a shaving of wood around the tenon. This works better than trying to make the mortise smaller. Furniture is ofter made with hide glue. It will come off with warm water. Repairs will go best if you use the same glue to reassemble the furniture. Hide glue is now available in squeeze bottles.

Thanks. Here are two product references for wood swellers/glue.

I'm thinking your recommendation of gluing wood shavings or veneer around the tenon may be the best bet. I might try the other on one chair and see how it works.

Again thanks for the tips.
