Hi,
I have a large pasture with a wooden fence encircling it. It is approximately 1 acre, so we're talking a lot of fence here. My question: What is the easiest way to paint this monster? Do I have to use primer? Is there no 'magic' paint for outdoor use? How do I prep the surface? walk around with sandpaper?-yikes.
It was previously painted really sloppy by previous owners...They only painted the side facing the road(white)...big globs and runs...missing spots...Any help would be appreciated on this.

Thanks for your time.

I have often wondered the same thing.

The fence needs to be clean in order to paint. If one side is bare wood, it will need to be primed to paint. The other side, if the paint is mechanically sound, will probably do with just cleaning. Of course, you can sand down the globs and runs if you want, but it sounds like quite a project.

To clean the fence, a mixture of bleach 25% in water and a dash of Tide will clean it, kill and remove any mildew, and set it up for painting. This mixture needs to be thoroughly rinsed from the surface and washed off of any plants to avoid injuring them. The mixture is caustic and necessitates the use of protective clothing and eye protection. Spray the mixture onto the fence, let it sit for a few minutes and rinse.

As a minimum, scrup it with spic and span. It does not need rinsing

I would consider renting and learning to use a sprayer. Get yourself a sheet of 1/4 inch plywood to use as a backdrop to control overspray and to keep the paint on the fence.

It sounds as if you have your work cut out for you. Post back if we can be of any further assistance.

Thanx,

The only way I can see to do this is to use my buddy's gas-powered pressure washer...I'mm gonna have to get every bit of water hose I can find though...The tap is about 75-100 yards away from the farthest point on the fence. Is this feasible? Walk around with this thing and just pressure wash all the crap off-then let it sit for a week to dry???I would have to primer it then right??. The plywood is a great idea...

The bare wood will need primer. Priming the rest is a good idea.

The pressure washing is a good idea. That much hose will probably work ok on the pressure washer. I don't think the water requirements are too great.

It is important that the surface be clean to paint.

Hope this helps.
