I have a white brick chimeny that is showing signs of pollution decay and the mortar needs to be redone. I dont think I can handle this job by myself. I was thinking of covering the bricks with stucco but the cold will soon make it crack. I also think the appearance will not be that great. What about veneer bricks, can they be set on my old brickwork ? Can I just cover the chimeny with vinyl or alluminum siding? I dont use the fireplace anyway. I am looking for the easiest way to do this. Any suggestion will be welcome. Thanks

P.A.T.,

Trying to do this the easiest and cheapest way isn't the issue. The issue is doing it with SAFETY in mind.

I would suggest getting a professional over to look at what you have.

Applying brick veneer needs a good substrate and what you describe is not.

Applying vinyl or aluminum siding is not code approved.

It sounds like some brick replacement or constructing a new chase with metal flue in in order, all installed as per Code.

This will require a permit. Contact you local building authorities for their requirements and the professional you talk to will advise on Code requirements and best methods to repair/replacement.

Hope this helps!
