My aluminum drip edge is rusting and discolored. There's only about 1 1/2 " inches showing, but it looks bad especially since I have newly painted gutters and faschia board below it.

What type of preparation and what type of paint can you folks recommend to clean it up and getting it looking nice?

Thanks

Aluminum does not rust in the conventional sense that it turns reddish brown. If yours is reddish brown, it must be galvanized steel. Drip edge is usually galvanized steel. Rustoleum makes excellent products for priming and painting rusted metal.

Aluminum usually turns a whitish color when it "rusts" or oxidizes. This coloration is quite subtle and is usually not noticed. Aluminum usually oxidizes in a few minutes after exposure to the ambient air. According to the manufacturer, Zinsser 123 can be used to prime aluminum. Rustoleum also makes products for priming aluminum. Then you can follow with a paint of your choice. Latex is generally used to paint metal over a good primer.

Hope this helps.
