I am preparing some yellow pine for staining. Some of the wood has patches of black and some areas that are reddish. I have tried bleaching, which did nothing, and I have tried sanding them out. Sanding helps to get some of the patches out, but some of the patches seem to be deep into the wood and I am sanding depressions into the surface to no avail! What are these patches and how can I remove them before staining?
Thanks, for any suggestions.

Wood is a natural product, yielding natural results.
The stains in the wood may have been there from something that occured during the growth of the tree, its drying, or storage. For the most part, the stains that you see on wood when you buy it will always be there.
I would select another piece that meets your needs.
Hope this helps.
