My husband and I are in the process of refinishing our bi-level deck, which is quite large. We had problems with it peeling and decided to pressure wash it, which did not remove everything. So now we have decided to sand down to the bare wood.
Here is our problem: we want to reuse the old deck boards due to costs involved. Since the boards now have screw holes in them is there some type of wood putty, epoxy, or other type of filler we can use that will withstand the external conditions and not fall out in a year? We are located in PA. Plus accept a solid stain?
I've also seen some products on the market that are for resurfacing the entire board. Has anyone used that and is it successful?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

blw5point,

A professional stripper containing sodium hydroxide will remove your peeling finish. It may take some hand scrubbing along with the PW, but it will come off.
Sanding is a problem since it will remove the galv protective coating off all the screw/nail heads. Cant you use the same screw/nail holes?? A putty really won't hold.

And after all this, you want a solid film type finish AGAIN.

Go for a semi-transpaent oil base finish(cedar, redwood, tone) with water repellancy and UV inhibitors.
A few suggestions are: Cabots, Sikkens, Wolman F&P, ReadySeal, and Superdeck, or Menwood. You'll find some of these at regular paint stores - not at the big box stores. These are what the pros will use.
But still, 2 or maybe three years is maximum life. Then time for a redo.
