I would like to install a light/vent unit directly above my shower/tub. Is this allowed by most codes? Or is there an electricity hazard - even if GFI protected?

Karl,
I'm not an electrician, but I think that the answer to your first ? is Yes, and the second ? is No. Certainly bathroom vent fan/light fixtures are made for exhausting very moist air and lighting the space. You just have to know your cubic footage (height X width X depth) to calculate what size (room)exhaust fan you need. There is no such thing as OVER-exhausting a very damp bathroom, in my opinion. Better to get a larger cfm exhaust fan, than one too small to work properly. Good Luck! Edit: Although most vent fan/light fixtures may look the same size, the size of the fan MOTOR will determine the cfm, so look for it on the box.
