Last year I finished my deck with Behrs acrylic/alkyd solid color stain which was blue in color. It turns out that it is a little too blue for our liking. We would like to go with a gray color too match our house. So far the stain has held up quite well (no chipping or peeling). There is some fading on the horizontal surfaces. My wife posed the question to Behrs and there response was. Behr 15 minute quick fix (stripper?), followed by multisurface Deck Prep. Lastly apply Cleaner, Brightener, Conditioner, followed by new stain.
I would appreciate any opinions, info, comments on my plans to change color. I've done some searching on this forum and have seen the recommended stains, wolmans, cabots, etc. Do these come in solid color that could be matched to our siding?
Thanks

Turning the blue stained deck into a gray stained deck is probably doable. Like Behr said, you will have to strip and clean the deck first. This will remove some, maybe most, but certainly not all of the blue stain. Then you will have to use a gray stain. You can probably come close to the color of the house, but don't expect a perfect match.

Being that the current stain is in good condition Could I overcoat it? The blue is a light blue and the gray would be a med-dark gray? The back of the can says it's acceptable if its in the same color range. Does that mean the same color?

dtro,

You would have to post pictures in the paint forum and let one of those guys answer THAT question for you. My GUESS (and this is only a guess!!) is that the lite blue and the medium gray are probably in the same range, so overcoating may work. Do you have the blue in an out of the way place where you could experiment with it??

Chances are you would have to accept the deck being a color that is close to and blends with the house color, -- I don't think a "perfect match" is going to be an option. I say that because you are dealing with 2 different woods, one that has been stained a lite blue and one that hasn't, one that is a horizontal surface and one that is a vertical surface, ...
