I have a medium shrub that I cut down. I want to remove the root so I can plant grass over it. I can not pull it out because of a fence next to it. I try hoping it with a axe but I am not getting anywhere with it. How can I get rid of it and how long will it take?

I would try to remove as much as possible with shovel, axe, and maddock, then let it die on its own. You could plant grass once the stump is knocked down enough to cover with soil.

What is maddock?

Here I go again with the colloquial terminology, sorry. And I could not spell, either.

Hope this helps.

To get old shrubs out from the front of my house, I used my sawzall the cut the shrub at the base, then dug till I could see all the roots and then sawzall'd the root system out and it was great. Easy and fun with power tools. Just get the longest wood blade you can get for the sawzall (or recirculating saw for that matter). Peace: e3 - spamman
