I have a JD 116 garden tractor which I purchased used and so I don't have a manual. The hydrostatic transmission fluid looks kind of dirty and was wondering if it should be changed. I talked to some people and they told me that it's not necessary. This is a 1984 model and I'm sure that it wouldn't hurt. If it should be changed then here are my ????'s

1: What type of fluid is required?

2: How much fluid should it take?

Thanks in advance..

Hello wallyk!

It wouldn't hurt to change the fluid. A John Deere dealer would have the fill capacity and fluid type info for you. I believe your trans will work with Hygard low-viscosity oil, from JD, or mobil 1 10w-30 synthetic engine oil. Check with the dealer to be sure.
