Birds are pecking away at my newly planted tomatoes; they strip all the leaves and just leave the main stem; I would never have imagined birds doing this, but I saw them. What can I do to stop this? George

Bird netting from the local box store or a nursery.
Alternatively, rapid-response cats can be effective.

One other thing you might want to try.
I first found & used ( Bird Scare Tape) trying to keep the birds from eating the Corn sprouts up. I was really pleased with the protection it provided everthing I used it on.
We did not have all our fruit trees then, except for an old stunted red chery tree, about 20 feet from the Corn. We strung the BST from the long pole at one end to a shorter pole at the other end of the block of Corn.
Three cherry pies we picked & no more birds around the Corn or Cherry tree. This tape makes the birds think the grounds on fire, or like my next door neighbor says, she got so dizzy looking at the tape, she fell into her pool, after looking at the BST.
It' mylar with Silver & Red that keeps the birds away. One word of caution, we take the tape down, after we harvest or are done protecting the crop. We want our birds to nest and eat insects, so be forewarned. This tape keeps birds away, from where you put it, so take it up when you are done & it will last for years, that way also.
