Well, like a lot of folks, this spring I found the old central AC ain't working. It blows air, but it ain't cold. I've cleaned it -- got the leaves and gunk from inside the outside unit. Now what . . .

What are the possible problems and can I fix 'em, or is it best to call in a pro?

Thanks

Does the outdoor unit make any sound at all? Is the outdoor fan running? Or the compressor?

The fan goes, it doesn't make any unusual sounds. Not sure if the compressor is working . . . I would do this by . . .

I think you should call a HVAC tech to look at it;) ED

Remove the side panel with a 5/16" nut driver, see the biggest electromagnetic switch behind the electical panel. Be careful this is high voltage (unless you kill the circuit breaker which is highly advisable)...visuall inspect the wiring to it for blu-ish burnt metal or wires see if the wires are securely attached to the compressor that looks like a big can with wires going to it an piping. If it's a Trane it's likely red. with some electricians tape and a paper. remove two of the fan wires and tape them. Label where they go first!...Re-apply power and see if the compressor starts... it will pull in the electromagnetic contactor to energize the compressor you'll hear this start for sure because the fan wont be running this time. If the compressor starts, dont let it run like this for more than say 10-15 seconds, you might need a helper to do this test unless you have a disconnect outside beside the unit which is code in most states. This will let you know IF the compressor started...Do this first then we'll go from there.

Thanks for the help. As soon as it dries up outside I'll get to it and report back.

Agian, thanks!
