I have a 3.5hp tecumseh lawnmower and it has good spark and I put gas in the plug hole and it still won't even kick. I built this mower out of parts from three mowers the same. This engine had a broken rod so I replaced it with one out of another motor that I had for parts. I set the timming correct on the crankshaft and camshaft by lining up the dots on the gears. I checked the compression with an automotive tester and it reads about 35psi. What should it be on this engine? Could it be a partialy sheared flywheel key? Or what else should I check? Thanks in advance.

That's not much compression. Check your valve clearances. How did the cylinder walls and rings look?
