How would one best attach the end of a 2X4 to a 6X6 post? I want to build a wind break/privacy area on my deck and have some 6X6 posts sticking up 6 feet above deck height. I want to have a horizontal 2X4 between them at the top and bottom of my "fenced" area and fill in with some other fence type arrangement. Toenailing with screws or nails seems the only way, yet I am not big on "toenail" fastening.

Try using Simpson FR24's. Simply attach the hangers on the posts where you want the 2X4's to attach, slip the 2X4 in place, and secure both ends of the 2X4 per instructions. MUCH stronger than toe nailing or toe screwing.

For what you're talkin about I'd use the Simpsons myself. They're available at any decent hardware store or lmbr yd.

And, for what you are doing, you can install the Simpsons with screws.
