We need to buy a new gas water heater immediately. We would like to find one of a little better quality than the ones at Home Depot/Lowe's but aren't sure how to proceed with that.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Or, any recommendations on brands you've bought and are happy with? Where is a good place to find a step above the quality from the home improvement stores? Or, are they just fine and we should just go with what they offer?
Any help you can give us asap would be much appreciated.

There are not many manufacturers of water heaters. Those that do make them apply the names of any company whom will buy them in large quanities, etc.
If you have one or more local hardware stores in town, visit them. The brands they often sell, install and service are those that they feel will provide their customers with the best service life.
Brand purchases are, is of course, a personal choice. Needing a water heater fast limits ones shopping time. If the ones at the local giant name brand chain retailers offer one at a price you can feel comfortable with, buy it.
Regards & Good Luck.
