We picked up an unfinished oak table and Im in the process of finishing it. I have added one coat of stain followed by about 4 coats of polyurethane. Between each coat of ureathane, I have lightly sanded with #400. I allowed each coat to dry about 2 days. When I look close at the table, the parts where the grain is very evident, it seems that the urethane is soaked in more. This gives an uneven surface. Any ideas on achieving a smooth finish? Im looking to be able to write smoothly on a single sheet of paper on top of the table.
The finish is being applied in my basement and it has been raining for the past week. Should I allow the urethane extra time to dry and then sand the table until the ridges are gone and then re-apply?
