When cleaning the coils on the outside units I noticed that the insluation on the copper lines going into the house had some cracks and gaps (up to 3/4") allowing the copper line to show. Its only about a 3' run. I am going to replace the damaged insulation but wondered how much this would hurt the efficiency of the cooling until I do.

I t won't hardly hurt the efficiency at all. The primary reason it's there is to keep the refrigerant gas from absorbing too much heat and raising the temp of the gas at the compressor inlet. The motor in the compressor depends on the cool gas for cooling.
