I live in the metroplex of Ft. Worth, Dallas Tx and have a Heil Heat Pump and cooling system which is approx. 6 years old. The unit (inside) is freezing up and I have heard the it could be low on freon. I have cleaned both the inside and outside units as well as changed the filter. I thought that had taken care of it but I guess it was just that the outside tempreture was comfortable. This unit has some sort of problem EVERY year, is this typical with heat pumps?
Any suggestions on fixing this problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Michael

If the coils are clean and the filter is clean the blower running as it should. Then you have to call a tech and have them look at the freon. You said each year trouble. Is it the same problem?????ARE is it the same TECH here? If its freon have they looked for a leak?;) ED

Ed, no, it has been a different problem each year and they range from cleaning (once) to thermostat, relays, and even a compressor (which was under warranty but still cost me $500. to replace).

Dont know what to tell you . Have had some that every time you turn around some thing go's out on it not just in a Hiel. like I know of one unit and it is a heil A/ C . has had a oil furnace under it a LP gas furnace and now has a electric furnace under it. It has had one new condenser fan and a capacitor. Thats all and it's 39 years old. All I can say here is you do keep your air filters clean. Is the power at the home real good are does it go off and on a lot,do the lights dim any. Does anyone there say play with the tstat like up and down.If any of the above you could get a time delay put on the unit. That would help . For now call a tech to look at the freon and could you have a leak from when they put the new compressor in did it leak before they worked on it ???;) ED

Has it done this since new? Is the entire coil freezing and the tubing all the way to the outside unit? If yes, then look for an airflow/heat exchange type problem. If the coil is only partially freezing, then probably a refrigerant shortage [read leak] which you need to get fixed or you'll be buying another compressor
