My deck builder made some steps/stairs for me. The top step is 11". The next step down and the succesive step have the 1 1/4" overhang from the step above, which leaves 9 3/4" tread width when stepping down ( they have a 6 3/4" rise). When I suggested a wider tread, he went ballistic and walked off the job!! I paid $2000 after the first day and was to pay the $2500 balance upon completion. He said they weren't coming back and I didn't have to pay any more money. Blew my mind. They said they couldn't work for me. I wanted the deck to be built to my specs and they wanted to build it their way. The bid was for $4500!! There is at least $2000 in lumber already and the work they have does looks great! As it stands, I will have a $4500 deck for, maybe, $2500. Almost makes me feel GUILTY!

The deck is complete except for railing and two more stairs, as well as a couple of band joists. I can probably finish the job myself for $400 or $500 dollars, but would like to know where I might find unique step designs with a little wider tread. I would like around 12 1/2" treads. Eliminate the overhand from the step above and put a 2X (two-by) band around the steps and I would have the 12 1/2" tread I am looking for. I could add risers, maybe.
