Hi,
We have a two story home in Northeast Alabama. We have moderate temps right now. We own two Ruud Heat Pumps, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. I heard a dripping sound the other day coming from the upstairs unit while running the A/C. The dripping is coming from the A-shaped evaporator coils in the hallway below the thermostat. I opened the cover, removed the air filter, and shined a flashlight up inside the opening and saw the water dripping from the fins. The fins do not look that dirty and the water is only dripping from the right side. I put a plastic pan inside to collect the water. In a couple of days, there will be quite a bit of water collected in the pan. I take and empty it out in the tub, and it starts to fill up again. The A/C seems to be cooling just fine. The unit is 10 years old. (Ruud, Model # UHQA-1010S is on the unit inside our bedroom closet). The unit did not drip like this last season, so I figure something is not right. Any ideas why the dripping has suddenly started? Should I have the unit checked out by the local serviceman?

Thanks,
Dean

The dripping is normal, but it should drip in condensate pan then go down a drain. You probably have a clogged condensate drain or the drain pan outlet on the a-coil drain is clogged.

Dean:

If the coil is dripping from one side and missing the tray there are a few possibilities.
The coil could be dirty. Shine a flashlight through the coil to check for blockage.
If the system were slightly low on refrigerant the coil could be partially icing up, causing the water to miss the tray.
