Bathtub hot water faucet wouldn't shut off. When turning the knob to off, it doesn't stop but keeps twisting loosely. Bought a new stem unit but, when I snap it in and put the hex back on, same thing is happening. What am I doing wrong? Would love to be able to turn the water on before the weekend is over! YIKES!

Is it the handle (probably either chromed pot metal or acrylic) or the valve stem (brass) that you replaced. The splines on either may be stripped. Remove both the hot and cold handles and see if you can shut the hot valve off with the cold handle. If you can, replace the hot handle. If you can't, you probably need to replace the valve stem.
