I hooked up a gas dryer that has an electronic igniter. when I put the dryer on for the first time I could smell I strong odor of gas. I immediately shut the dryer off while I checked my connections with neg results (no leaks). I waited for the smell to subside then I turned the dryer on again this time everything was fine. I must of ran the dryer at least 20 different times wih no problem (each time the gas ignited and dryer heated fine). Does anyone have any idea why I would have gotten a gas smell at the very first start up.

Hello Dan. Welcome to my Gas Appliances forum.
It's very possible there was some lint or dust in the burner or else where that has now burned out or cleared itself out.
I suggest you clean out the inside of the burner compartment or at least inspect the area to be sure it is dust and lint free.
DRYER SERVICE TIP:
It's always adviseable to clean the entire exhaust venting system every 2 years. Or during any dryer maintenance and or repairs.
