I have 6x6 posts and the 2x6 cap rails go over the top of the posts. They look kind of puny over the 6x6 posts. Would a 2x8 cap railing top look too wide? I will have a 2x4 on edge attached to the underside of the top rail with the spindles attached to this, going down to another 2x4 on edge for the bottom of the spindles, 3 1/2 inces off the deck.

I'm sure that the 2X6 top cap looks puny on 6X6 posts. A 2X8 cap would probably look much better.

What I have done is to cap the post with a 2x6 (horizontally) and attach a 2x8 back (vertically) on it with 4" of the board exposed above the top of the 2x6. Picture a sideways "T" if you would. It's great for setting drinks on it. They can't fall off the back side.

YEEHAW!!!!

I was rolling today! Tomorrow morning is gonna be another GREAT day and my confidence level is PEAKING! That is what its all about, isn't it? When our confidence is up,,,We can do anything, right? And what a great feeling it is. :) :) :) I LOVE it...

The railing,,,a simple thing really,,,but quite different from the desk (my usual mode of life), is going GREAT! The best part,,,It will be exactly how I WANT IT!

Just had to tell someone!

Didn't think it was going to be, but the finality of somethings is like,,, well, a real climax!

By the way,,,what are you doing, staying up as late as I am? Lord knows I have NO business being up this late. :D ;)

P.S. I really do appreciate your offer to help. I'll just think of it as you having done so. :D :)

Oh, Man! The railing is really looking fantastic! In the design stage it looked as if the lumber involved was going to be way overkill, but as it was going up I could tell is was going to look great. I have an older house and the front porch has the "over-sized" lumber in it and the interior trim is all 1X6 where as most newer homes use as small trim as they can get by with. So the heavy lumber of the deck fits in perfect.

Hope everyone else's projects are going well, too!
