Have done much floor tiling with great results for a rookie. We have tile left over - different colors but same size 12"X12". My wife who has great decorating ideas seems to think it would be alright to use it on a bathroom wall we are remodeling. I don't think it will work. Anyone with any ideas???

Put it on with thinset. It'll be fine. Why don't you think it will work?

Thanks John and floorman. Why I didn't think it would work--It's going around the bathtub. There's small tile there already, but pieces are falling off. You said John to put it on with thinset, meaning bonding mortar, but thinly? Like I said, I'm a rookie, but the kitchen and bathroom floor off the master bedroom looks good; so I'm told but friends who have seen it.

They are probably falling off because they were originally put on with mastic, or they were originally put on over greenboard that got wet.

Strip the walls to the studs. Put up 1/2" cement board (Hardibacker, DUROCK or Wonderboard). Go to Home Depot and buy a bag of Versabond mortar and your wall will last forever. (All mortars are not created equal.)

Thinset mortar is what you installed the floor tiles with (I hope). The basic technique is the same for walls.

Larger tiles on bathroom walls are great and very modern. As previously mentioned, go back to the studs, install concrete board and use a latex modified dryset portland cement mortar.
(such as Versabond at homedepot)

One problem you might run in to are the pipes. Most floor tiles are too hard to drill with a carbide hole saw.

Take your tiles that need holes for the pipes to a glass shop and pay them to drill with their diamond hole saws.

Good luck and listen to your wife.

Just want to say thanks for the advise and insight to John, floorman and Old tile man. I'll let you know how it turns out. Just found this site by chance, but will make it a regular stop. Thanks again!
