Whether to use mastic (a pre-mixed product that comes ready to apply) or thinset mortar cement (comes as a dry powder to which you add water) depends on the application.
On walls that don't see much moisture, such as a kitchen backsplash, mastic is easier to use.
On floors or wet areas, such as a shower surround, thinset mortar cement is the recommended product. Use a latex modified thinset mortar cement for floor applications.
Thinset mortar cement should be mixed with just enough water to get a thick consistenty, which will not pour out of the mixing container if you try. When mixing thinset mortar cement, it is easier to start mixing it soupy, then adding more dry powder a little at a time until you get a thick, smooth result.
