I hung new greenboard around the tub and then covered it with 1/4" cement board (hardibacker). Now I read that I should have skipped the greenboard and used 1/2" cement board directly over the studs. Do I need to rip everything out and start over or is what I did adequate? I'm putting ceramic over it.

All is OK. What you've done is a double redundant system. Both protect the wall from moinsture.

Don't you dare rip it all out.
