I understand the valves have "cartridges" and they have to be replaced to stop the leak. l. Is this right? 2. after removing the handle (easy) how do I get the cartridge out - I can see a hex nut with white plastic body inside - do I unscrew the hex not complete with the plastic fitting inside it, get an identical replacement from ACE/HOMEDEPOT and reverse what I did to get it out? thank you for your advice. .

You've got it. Obviously shut the water to the house off before removing the stems; you may need a valve socket of the right size to get to the retaining nut if a cresent wrench won't reach it, and it would be a good idea to replace the seats while you're there. Need an inexpensive seat wrench for that. Installation is just the reverse. Good luck.
