I have A Briggs brand commode with A cracked bottom. Can I use A bottom of another brand since I can't locate this contractors brand. What criteria to use for measuring?

I think if you shop around, you'll find that the cost of a complete new unit will be about the same or less than the bottom part alone.
Finding an exact match for the drain and bolt holes will be very difficult and the colour may not match.
My suggestion is to purchase a whole new unit.

Totally agree with Ted. Make sure that you measure the distance from wall to bolt holes to get proper match toilet base. Good Luck!
