The cold water handle leaks only when the shower is turned on. 40 year old faucet, I'm sure. Any suggestions where the problem is?

Sounds like you just need to replace the o-ring or valve stem packing on the cold water valve. Will need plumber's valve socket of proper size to remove valve, if you can't get to hexagonal piece on valve body with crescent wrench. Good Luck!
