I am thinking about usining slate on a counter top. I saw 1/4" slate at Home Depot. My ?? is would I need to seal this with something and can I just use mastic (spelling?) to attach to wonderboard???

I would also like to use the same slate around our fireplace(gas). This already has 1/2 slate(solid) piece. Would there be any problems putting it right on top?

Thanks for any and all Help!!

I's use a good modified thinset, mastic is ok to use, but will not stand up to getting wet.

On the fireplace, only issue I could see would be the obvious one of height of the facade (thinking glass fireplace doors), but yes it would work.

use only thin-set on the counter top with all the vibration and clanking of dishes and all you something under that tile to make it solid. On the fireplace with the slate already on there the mastic may never dry i think i might go with silicone on that

Thanks for the info. Actually this is a top for entertainment center I built. So I assume that mastic would be ok? The only other thing is do I need to put any type sealant on the slate ?? To avoid any
water etc. stains??

yes ,seal before you grout if you dont not only will it a lot harder to grout but the grout may stain the slate,Ithink i would still use mortar though especially if it is ungauged slate so you can[butter] the tile as needed
