Our new (old) house has an original Barney purple tile bathroom-(before he was even fashionable!) It's ugly and missing tiles so don't tell me to live with it! I've started to rip it down hoping to save a couple $$$. I found a one inch thick mortar bed under the tile (before the lath & key goodies) and another bigger one on the floor. Now we have a sledge hammer but that isn't getting me very far. about two hours spent today and I've about 20 tiles down.
Any suggestions?

The floor is still in one piece.

Sure sounds like the original contractor wanted the walls and floor to last for a very long time. Keep going on the wall with the hammer. I know it's a lot of work, but that's the way to procede.

As far as the floor goes, leave the existing floor and simply install a new floor over it.
