I am very close to a tiling project and have heard conflicting information as to tiling under or around the commode.
I was told to tile all the way under the commode, which would then need an extender sleeve and extended bolts, but would be the safe bet in case of any future toilet repair or replacement was needed.
On the other hand I was told that the above was not true and was ridiculous to think the toilet would sit well on all the extended pieces required to sit in the added thickness of the tile.
Can you help me out of this confusion?

Hi Joyce:
Assuming that you're talking about ceramic tile, personally, I would go under the toilet. The extenders you're talking about are readily available from any plumbing supply house.
If you decide to leave the toilet on the existing floor, you'll have to be much more precise when cutting the tiles.
I think you'll be happier with the look of the tiles under the toilet. This gives a much cleaner look. Make sure you caulk around the bottom of the toilet regardless of which installation method you choose.
