The tub continues to leak even though the lever is up and the tub should be stopped up.

Remove the two screws that hold the cover on where the lever is. Pull out the whole assembly.
There is an adjustable rod or chain that needs to be backed off just a bit. This will allow the stopper to travel farther down the tube and stop the drain.
You may have to try this a couple of times before you get it just right.
