I plan on putting in a ceramic tile kitchen floor.
I'm looking at the strength of my floor.
My joists are marked...
Douglas Fir
SEL STR
What does SEL STR mean?
Is this good or bad for tile floors?
Thanks,
Frank
PS I screwed up and originaly sent this to the Wood Floor forum

we also need to know the length, thickness, spacing. what is your substrate ply wood, how thick, one layer or two> are you thinking tile or marble.

sel str = select structural,
I agree with ee, need the info referred to to determine the floor's suitability for a tile install. The factors mentioned will determine the deflection of the floor, this determines whether tile is a go or not.

I have...
Doug fir, 2x8 joists set 16" OC, 11' bracing for joists
3/4" ply and plan on putting 1/4 hardibacker on this.
IF I have problems MIGHT they be minor cracking of grout OR major cracking of tile & grout?
Thanks,
Frank

based on this your substrate meets the min. requirment for tile. (your close, but meet it) Marble would not be suitable. do keep in mind you barely meet the MIN. do not have parties in the kitchen or roll any thing heavey over the floor or you might crack tile.. consider adding extra layer of ply before hardiboard.

Thats a positive sign.
My understanding is that adding an EXTRA layer of ply won't really help with the flexing to prevent cracks. What do ya' think?

A extra layer will help stiffen the floor and help.
