I need to repair the wall inside a fireplace chimney on the second floor of our house. I need to restud the wall, etc, and would like to know what material I should place between the brick chimney and the studs. All repair has to be done from the inside. Moisture had damaged the present studs and caused them to rot. Moisture source has been eliminated and now repair is necessary.

Thank you

trmi,

The need for the 2" spacing is critical!

R1003.12 Fireplace Clearance - All wood beams, joists, studs and other combustible material shall have a clearance of not less than 2 inches (51mm) from the front faces and sides of masonry fireplaces and not less than 4 inches (102mm) from the back of masonry fireplaces. The air space shall not be filled except to provide fireblocking in accordance with Section R 1003.14

This has good illustrations..

Hope this helps!
