We are putting in a new blacktop driveway lined on the sides with pavers. There is an area new the front which currently is dirt with the roots of a nearby maple tree coming up through the ground. We've gotten 4 estimates for this job and 2 said we could cut the roots and leave the tree that it shouldn't grow back. (one said he would just go deeper with the concrete under the pavers and that should keep them from coming back) Another said to cut the roots but would prefer to go around the affected area with the pavers and leave the area dirt. The last one said we should cut down the tree. Anyone have any experience with roots coming back and destroying the job? Thanks.

It is always my preference not to cut down a tree, if there is any way possible to avoid it.

It might be a good idea to call a local arborist to look at your tree and give you some recommendations. Each tree is individually different in location, growth patterns, age, and such.

Surface rooting trees will grow the roots back, unless something is done to contain them. If you cut the roots, you could extend an impermeable surface into the ground a foot or so and block the roots from penetrating. Here, too, an arborist could give you precise recommendations which tend to vary by soil conditions.

Hope this helps.
