I applied Oil based poly way too thick on oak flooring. After 4 days its still soft. Will it still cure? Its the high resin flooring type.
Floor was sanded w/old poly coat on it.

In order for it to dry, you will need to go over it with some coarse sand paper to open the film on the top and allow the solvent to evaporate. There is a good chance that it will never cure properly. You may have to sand it down to the original coat and start over.

Are you saying these solvents are trapped forever? I'm willing to wait weeks if need be. I really don't want to scrape up the floor!

Oil based finishes 'dry' by oxidation. That is a chemical reaction with the air. The solvents evaporate and the oxidation process ensues. The finish film hardens in this process. If the coating is too thick for this to happen, some of the solvents don't evaporate fast enough for the finish to harden, leaving a mushy finish for all time.

It won't cost anything to wait, but I would not be sanguine about a favorable outcome.

Sorry.

chfite is correct in his explaination of how a varnish cures .

but if you decide to wait it out , may I offer a suggestion .
leave a dehumidifier running around the clock . this MAY make a difference .
