Whe installing a new fiberglass shover/tub combo, do you first sheetrock around it, or do you fasten the unit to the studs directly?

Most contractors will use a cement backer board. This is water proof and will help eliminate any leading problems. It's always best to provide a smooth flat surface for the tub and walls. You'll be much happier with the end result.
