It seems my TV needs a new Horizontial Output Transisor (HOT). I have a 1996 Magonvox 25" TV and a few days ago it went dead. But before it died the picture had lines going diagonially and then I could not turn the TV off so I unpluged it. Now it won't come on. I have done my homework and figured out that the HOT has gone bad. I called the repair man who wants $85 just to look at it. Can my husband fix it himself?

HELP I feel like an amish person without my TV
Thanks

If you really sure that the problem is from HOT, you can look at the transistor number and buy a replacement. It is probably cost less than $10 for the transistor. It has only 3 pins to solder, and not likely mounted on a heat sink. It should be relatively easy to replace.

That's a big clue--Not being able to turn off the TV sounds like the problem is elsewhere. The HOT has little to do with controlling power on the TV.

The lines you mentioned may be a clue. And the Horizontal Output Transistor will be mounted on a heatsink. But that should not be a problem. Take a look at the pictures on the following link and see if one of them are close to what you saw. If they were a much much brighter version of "Retrace Lines", the transistor is not a likely cause.
