My gas dryer autodry function no longer shuts off when the clothes are dry, all other functions seem to still work. What could be the problem?

Hello Frich. Welcome to my Gas Appliances forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

The most likely but not only part that may be causing the problem is the timer control or a seperate selection switch for that function.

The timeris the control center for all functions. The timer has internal contacts and as it advances through the cycles, one of those contacts can become burned out, stuck opened or closed for any one of several reasons.

Timers also have cams <lobes> that open and close the contact points. If the timer hangs-up on a lobe, it may or may not advance to the next cycle or deactivate a section function.

If the timer or any other selection switch, on the front control panel, is suspected of causing the existing problem you're having with the appliance, be sure all selections are correctly set first.

If they are, the timer or other function selected switch may be defective. Timers are a non repairable item. Any or all of the control panels switches can be removed and taken to the local appliance retail parts store for testing.

Be sure the appliance is unpluged before attempting repairs unless there is a need to check for electrical current to or from a part being tested, etc.

Retail appliance parts dealers can also help determine what the possible problem may be also. They will need the make, model and serial numbers.

Appliance parts dealers are an excellent source for original replacement parts. Dealers are listed in the phone book under appliances.

Thanks for the help. I was thinking the problem could the timer or something to do with a sensor that detects the moisture in the clothes. I was not sure how the auto dry selection works, my thought was a moisture sensor.

Thanks again

Hi,

**I was not sure how the auto dry selection works**

A copy for a common "auto" cycle...

**Dryer Basics - timers and how they work: Timed dry cycles on a timer are the simplest timer cycle. The timer motor receives 120 volts and just advances all the way from where you set it to the off position. Example- You set it for 50 minutes, it will run for 50 minutes and shut off. The AUTO cycle is a little different. The operating thermostat cycles off and the power is redirected to the timer motor to advance the timer to the off position. There is no power to the timer motor until the thermostat cycles the heat off and then that power is directed to the timer motor. If your timer will not advance in timed and auto dry...probably a bad timer or wire. If your timer will not advance in AUTO dryer but will advance in timed dryer...problem is normally not your timer.**

A bad thermostat, poor air flow are 2 very common trouble makers for the auto cycles quiting.

Since all other timer functions are working, the thermostat idea maybe the answer. I will also check the vent to ensure it isn't plugged.

Thanks for all your help!
