What would be the best finish for a oak kitchen table. one that wouldn't be too shiney, gives a good even finish, I can work with oil base or water base, whatever gives the best results.:) Thanks for any help!!!

Polyurethane or tung oil would cover the spectrum.

Polyurethane is probably more popular.

totally agree with the polyurethane versus tung oil for a kitchen table . polyurethane ( which is actually varnish with urethane resins added to the blend ) is much more durable . if you dont like a lot of shine , go with a satin . and I would also stay away from water based polyurethane . yes , water based finishes smell better than solvent based ; but water base is also EXTREMELY clear ( unless you want to tint it with an amber tinting agent ). you may not like how the water base looks .

just remember if you use poly/satin that it is not as durable as gloss. they add flatting agents to get the satin look and that reduces the durablitiy of the finish.

if i use poly i use gloss and then rub out the finish with a green pad and johnson paste wax with paint thinner to obtain a flat or satin look.

doing the rub out also helps with any bumps you might have from the open time/drying of the poly.
