I am replacing a rotted out post on my old 1850 barn. an adjacent beam has a solid tenon that wants to be placed in a mortis on the new post.

Tenon size is 7" length and a width of 2" thus the moris would be the same size . .

Any ideas on how I can make this with a standard toolset in my shop? (no drill press however....)

I guess I'd use a wood auger and a sharp chisel.
