I am going to be replacing the windows in my home (which is in Wisconsin). Any suggestions on certain manufacturers? Wood or vinyl? and type of glass? also, is it very hard to install windows yourself, or is it best to leave it to professionals?

Hi Jerstew.

First a suggestion: read through all the threads in here on replacement window type comparisons. That will give you some background to start. Go back 60 - 90 days.
Then from that, you must make up your personal criteria to which you want the replacement windows to meet.

Also, define your budget first. Then based on what you want, find products from reputable manufacturers and quality installers and interview them all. Also, check BBB ratings and references.

With all this in mind, a couple of features I would definitely go with are double paned, Argon filled up in your neck of the woods. You don't need Low E glass coating as your summers are not as hot (and not very long), as they are here in KC. For more on this review the Energy Star rating that many windows carry.

Also, shop your big box home improvement stores for eduation on wood vs. vinyl windows to see what you like for look, feel, maintenance, etc.
Replacement windows don't take very long to install but in case of newness, always better to have a pro do it.

Good luck.
