Painting - Did we goof up?

Within the last 10 days we finished painting the kitchen trim, doors etc with Glidden semi-gloss latex paint. Everything was washed and rinsed with TSP prior to painting. We've noticed several chips already where the trim was bumped. We are beginning to think that the old paint might have been oil base (house is 12 years old so no lead problems). Any other possibilities? Any EASY solution?

Well, paint will chip when struck just right. Latex paint requires about 7 days to reach full hardness. The old paint being oil based is not as important as preparation of the surface. There is a persistent myth that latex cannot be applied over alkyd and vice versa.

Washing with TSP and a good rinse was a good step.

Did you apply one or two finish coats? You get much better use from two finish coats.

The chips, are they coming off down to the prior finish or down to the wood?

The easy solution may well be to wait and let the finish harden completely.

I keep the can of paint and a tiny brush around until i am absolutely done working on a room for just that reason. Well, plus I tend to bang into the freshly painted trim while reinstalling lights and other hardware.
