My daughter is 16 and just got her driver license and we bought her a used car...realizing insurance would be at least doubled.
It turns out just for liability the premium will increase by $1720/yr.
I was complaining this to the car dealer I bought the car from, surprisingly he said by NC state law I do not have to add my daughter to the policy, and as long as the car is insured (under my name) she will be covered should accident happen.
I ask him how to buy insurance for this car, he said I do not have to tell insurance co. the 3rd driver ( my daughter). Somehow I am extremely skeptical of his suggestion but...the huge saving kept my curious. Besides, he is very sure about what he said.
Well, can smoeone give me input/idea how do I deal with this?
I have read an earlier post on the same subject and no one mentioned this approach.
Thanks,

Here's a link to the Consumer Info pages of the NC Insurance Commisioner's Office; http://www.ncdoi.com/Consumer/Consumer.asp
Just for the fun of it, I ran through their rate calculator which can be found under "Info about Specific Types of Insurance" and what may be of interest is the catagorizations of "occasional" and "principal", when you get through the wizard to driver frequency. There's also a pdf file you may want to look at and of course, you might want to inquire of some folks who have lived in NC for a while, as to what they do with their teens.
My advice, do like the natives...
And re-elect Jim Long, he's the greatest insurance commissioner of which, I am aware.
